Covid & your car

Its the new normal now to expect changes in relation to the current pandemic situation. In these unprecedented times our ability to adapt and change on a daily basis is now more important than ever.

As always, Car Friend your local go to car repair garage, is your go to place for the latest information for everything vehicle related. One of the biggest changes to affect motorists is the change to the compulsory MOT test.

MOT's are a legal requirement for all cars over three years old. The test should be done every 12 months. This is to ensure your vehicle is 'roadworthy'.

Due to the recent Lock-down, the government offered motorists a 6 month extension on their MOT. This was to give some leeway to those who needed to self isolate and to minimise non essential journeys.

What you need to know

If your vehicle was due its MOT between March 30th and July the 31st there will be an automatic 6 month extension added to your MOT test certificate.

If your car is due to have an MOT from 1st of August 2020 onward, there will be No extension granted and you must ensure your MOT is performed before the date on your previous MOT test certificate.

  • If you fall into the 6 month extension category, for safety reasons we are urging customers to get their MOT carried out sooner rather than later if you are able to.

  • The extension was granted to protect those during lock-down and for those that are vulnerable and shouldn't be abused.

  • As a vehicle owner/ driver you are always responsible to make sure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, so now more than ever those vital checks should be carried out.

  • Your MOT certificate will not be extended if your vehicle’s MOT expires on or after 1 August 2020.

  • You must book an MOT as usual.

  • MOT centres are open now for you to get an MOT.

  • You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. BOOK your MOT slot NOW to avoid the anticipated wait times Call us on 01543 276060
